Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if Wilson tutoring is right for my child?
Before beginning tutoring, we give students a series of standardized and informal assessments. If they score below the 25th percentile in word reading and spelling, and their reading fluency and comprehension are significantly impacted, then Wilson tutoring will likely be a good fit for them. Most Wilson students start out at least two years behind grade level in reading and spelling.
If your child already has a clinical diagnosis of dyslexia, we can be confident that Wilson will be appropriate instruction for them.
Do you work with students who do not have a diagnosis of dyslexia?
Yes, we can work with any student who is below the 25th percentile in word reading and spelling. They may or may not have a diagnosis of dyslexia, learning disability or reading disorder. Many of our students have IEPs or 504 plans.
Do you diagnose dyslexia?
Although we are qualified to recognize symptoms of dyslexia, we do not diagnose dyslexia. Dyslexia diagnoses are typically made by clinical psychologists using a broad battery of tests.
How frequently do students attend tutoring?
Usually 3-4 hours per week. These are scheduled in 45-60 minute sessions. The schedule is determined by the learning needs of the student.
How long do students receive tutoring before getting caught up in reading?
Our students typically work with us for 2-4 years. Their rate of progress depends on their starting point and their degree of reading challenge.
In which schools do you offer Wilson reading tutoring?
We currently offer Wilson at St. John's School of Little Canada and Salem Lutheran School in Stillwater. We tutor students enrolled at these schools during the day.
We are open to working in additional schools as well. If you are interested in having a Reading Rays tutor work with your child in a different school, please reach out to your school principal and share our information. If a partnership is feasible, we will work with the school to facilitate in-school tutoring for your child.
Do you offer after school tutoring?
We do not offer after school tutoring. We can recommend qualified after school tutors.
How much does tutoring cost?
Our rates are comparable to local private tutoring rates, $70 per session. Please inquire about school year package pricing. Tuition assistance is often available.
What ages and grades do you offer Wilson tutoring to?
Wilson tutoring is offered to students in Grades 2-8 at our partner schools.
Do you offer other services at schools?
Yes, we offer reading specialist support services at partner school St. Croix Catholic. In addition, we provide professional development to teachers, as requested by our partner schools.
Do you have a contract with parents?
Yes, in-school tutoring involves a 9-month contract with parents. This contract provides parents with school-year package pricing and a guaranteed number of instructional hours. This is a flexible contract and is paid monthly. If a student needs to leave tutoring before the school year is finished, the contract can be amended.
Are the Reading Rays tutors certified?
Yes, all of the Reading Rays tutors are certified Wilson Dyslexia Practitioners. Their training involves over 200 hours of learning. Tutors complete a year-long academic course as well as a year-long practicum involving tutoring a student, while being observed and supervised by a Wilson trainer.
